Available Infrastructure
Over the past few years, UNIFEI has promoted significant improvements in the physical infrastructure for teaching, research, and outreach. We can highlight the following laboratories that have a direct link to the program:
a) CEQUAM – Center for Studies in Environmental Quality :

The CEQUAM laboratory provides technical and scientific support to UNIFEI’s Postgraduate programs with an environmental focus, strengthens research groups at the University, and expands the professional and scientific training of undergraduate and postgraduate students. It has laboratories for chemical and microbiological water analysis, soil quality analysis, and the Computational Laboratory for Air Quality and Environmental Policies, which has nine computers available for use by program students.
b) CERPCH – National Reference Center for Small Hydroelectric Power Plants :

The CERPCH laboratory contributes to studies related to renewable energies, highlighting small hydroelectric power plants (PCHs). CERPCH’s main objective is to disseminate the use of water resources for energy in small power plants, in addition to others such as: collecting, systematizing, disseminating and spreading scientific, technological, economic-commercial, socio-environmental information, studies and programs; promoting research and training programs for researchers, designers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs and end users; monitoring scientific and technological development and promoting the exchange of information with institutions in Brazil and abroad; promoting and participating in national and regional events; promoting the publication of journals, books, manuals, catalogs, bulletins, technical-scientific productions, videos and media; Providing services such as studies, feasibility analyses, inventories, and other basic projects to facilitate the creation of new ventures in the area; providing support to educational institutions so that new forms and technologies for harnessing renewable energy can be developed.
c) CEPreMG – Center for Weather and Climate Studies and Forecasting of Minas Gerais :

The CEPreMG laboratory is the first reference center for weather and climate studies in the region, monitoring and providing weather and climate forecasts for the entire state of Minas Gerais, focusing on the city of Itajubá and neighboring cities. CEPreMG is the main laboratory for teaching activities related to climate and weather for the student body of Unifei and functions as a research center in Atmospheric Sciences, hosting activities of research groups with close national and international collaborations. CEPreMG was funded with resources from Unifei itself, the IRN, and with the support of research projects coordinated by professors of Atmospheric Sciences and funded by funding agencies such as CNPq and Fapemig. The Center works in close collaboration with the most important weather forecasting center in the Southern Hemisphere, the Weather and Climate Forecasting Center of the National Institute for Space Research (CPTEC/INPE), and with the National Center for Monitoring and Alerts of Natural Disasters (CEMADEN), both linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). Municipal and state Civil Defense agencies are important partners in this proposal for services and care for the population. The laboratory has desktop computers, monitors, a multimedia projector, a digital rain gauge, diagram kits, a soil thermometer, a barograph, a thermograph, an evaporimeter, a thermohygrograph, a psychrometer, a portable digital thermo-anemometer, an infrared thermometer, and a soil thermometer. This laboratory is used for teaching, research, and outreach. Practical classes and research in the area of Meteorology and related fields can be carried out in the laboratory through interactions, program development, and modeling. CEPreMG has been promoting practical classes in the Weather Forecasting component. This Center has also provided subsidies for various areas of knowledge underway at UNIFEI, such as wind energy utilization, pollutant dispersion, and weather forecasting, the latter of which has a strong appeal for outreach, as the daily bulletins issued are frequently visited by the community in general.
d) LEAS – Laboratory of Environmental Education and Sustainability :

The LEAS laboratory is the first Green Room in the region, and was selected by the Ministry of the Environment – MMA (Department of Environmental Education – 2018) to become a Green Room, working with research and outreach. The Green Room Project consists of encouraging the implementation of socio-environmental spaces to act as potential Centers for Environmental Information and Training. The basic dimension of any Green Room is the availability and democratization of environmental information and the pursuit of maximizing the possibilities of the distributed materials, contributing to the construction of a space that, in addition to access to information, offers the possibility of reflection and construction of environmental thought/action. They can dedicate themselves to educational projects, actions, and programs focused on socio-environmental issues, in addition to fulfilling a dynamic role, from an articulating and integrating perspective, enabling initiatives that promote the effective participation of various segments of society in environmental management, following an agenda of action permeated by educational actions that move towards sustainability.
e) Platform vehicle for hydrokinetic turbine testing, laboratory built with CNPq resources, via INCT, INEOF.
f) Wave Channel Beater , a laboratory built with CNPq resources, via INCT, INEOF.
g) Limnology and Ecotoxicology Laboratory , used for teaching and research. Ecotoxicological tests are developed with aquatic organisms; currently, Paramecium caudatum (research by PNPD scholarship holder Marcus Senra) and Daphnia similis are the organisms used in acute and chronic exposure tests;
h) The Meteorology Laboratory conducts small-scale experiments on wind flow and has 35 computers.
These spaces have brought several achievements to the Program’s faculty, and students benefit from gains in quality and the development of research of local, regional, and international interest.
i) LAICA – Audiovisual Laboratory for Climate and Environmental Information:
The Audiovisual Laboratory for Climate and Environmental Information (LAICA) has the following objectives: a) the development of audiovisual material for the dissemination of subjects relevant to education, research and extension projects involving themes related to weather, climate, the environment and water resources, extendable to other areas of activity developed at Unifei; b) the preparation and training of students and teachers in media and communication techniques; c) support for the teaching activities of undergraduate, postgraduate and extension courses.
Specifically, in addition to the spaces offered by Unifei such as classrooms, videoconferencing rooms, and the library, the program utilizes several laboratories for the development of its activities, which are available at the IRN, the institute where the program is located.

It also includes the program’s infrastructure:
A greenhouse of 80 m² with automatic temperature control and irrigation systems, with automatic temperature, humidity (misting) and drip irrigation control. A cold storage chamber for research material with a storage capacity of 10,000 m³. The arrival of new equipment contributed to the sustainability and improved quality of POSMARH. Auxiliary building for experiment installation: 120 m² screened with shade cloth (50%) to facilitate the installation, conditions, and measurement of experiments using plants.
All laboratories, greenhouses, and auxiliary experimental setup buildings are equipped with the necessary equipment and supplies for teaching, research, and outreach activities. The constant updating of these spaces is achieved through the participation of POSMARH faculty in funding agency grant programs (FAPEMIG, CAPES, FINEP, CNPq, and internal institutional funding). Requests for supplies are submitted by faculty to the Program Coordination via memorandum, specifying the importance of the material, its use, and price quotes. These requests are then presented to the Program Coordinating Committee and, if approved, are allocated for purchase using PROAP-CAPES funds and institutional resources. All expenditure control of funds allocated through this program is managed by the coordination and approved by the CCP.
All faculty members of the program (POSMARH) have individual offices, distributed across blocks L8, L9, Cequam, and block M3 of the Federal University of Itajubá, all located under the Institute of Natural Resources (IRN).
POSMARH has a total of 13 classrooms, with varying dimensions (between 20-40 m²), distributed in block L8 (5), block L9 (1), block M3 (02), Cequam (01), PRPPG (04). Two rooms are specifically for student use, one being a meeting room and the other an activity room, which has 6 computers, tables, and chairs in excellent condition. In addition, there are two auditorium rooms (block 08 and CEQUAM), one of which has videoconferencing equipment for defenses, meetings, and classes between professors and researchers from other institutions, both national and international. Block M3 has one small meeting room and one larger meeting room, accommodating approximately 60 people. All meeting rooms and auditoriums have dedicated projectors and air conditioning. The Vice-Rectorate for Postgraduate Studies has prepared two exclusive classrooms with web and videoconferencing systems.
Additionally, in block M3, the Fluid Mechanics laboratory, coordinated by Prof. Arcilan Trevenzoli Assireu, the Geoprocessing laboratory, coordinated by Prof. Nívea Pons, and the Acoustics and Occupational Health Experiments laboratory, coordinated by Prof. Luiz Felipe Silva, were installed, all related to experiments by POSMARH students.
In addition to these laboratories, this building houses the Remote Office of the Pro-Rectorate for Graduate Studies, with an office and secretary dedicated exclusively to serving the program. The absence of a program secretary had been noted in the last evaluation, and this has been duly addressed, now forming part of the program’s administrative infrastructure.
The Meteorology computer lab, equipped with 35 computers, was installed in building I3, under the coordination of Prof. Vanessa Barreto, and the Environmental Education and Sustainability Laboratory (LEAS), coordinated by Prof. Daniela RT Riondet-Costa, was installed in building L8.
